Why did you choose the ARC Weight Management program?

After moving to the Austin area I just continued to gain weight and get bigger and bigger.  My parents were both diagnosed with Diabetes this year due to their weight and that was an eye opener for me.  I was on the same path. I was on hold to schedule a Dr. appointment and heard the message about the weight management program so when I saw the Dr. I ask about the program.  She didn’t have much information but said to call the phone number listed.  I knew I needed to loose weight and surgery was not going to be an option for me.

What part of the program is the most effective in helping you?

I would have to say the group sessions and the support I receive from Jennie the program manager.  The group session has allowed me to see what type of eater I was before this program and have learned ways to avoid going back to those old habits when I return to eating food.  Jennie is so positive always giving the best advice on what to do in any situation.  I would also have to say  learning it is better to eat more often and less food to keep your metabolism up to burn off the unwanted fat. 

What new habits or lifestyle changes have you made as a result of the program?

I have learned when I am stressed I need to leave the house and do something that does not involve food.  I have also begun exercising more regularly than I ever did and actually enjoy it.  I currently live on the third floor of an apartment complex and had trouble climbing the stairs with out getting winded and now I can run them. Exercising will always be a part of my life.

Another habit I have learned is to make sure that I plan for the day as things can come up and I don’t want to go back to my old ways.  I always make sure that I have my full days meals with me just in case something comes up.  I have noticed when going to dinner with friends while on this program how much food is served when eating at a restaurant.  I have decided to ask for a to go container before ever taking a bite. 

How much weight and inches have you lost*?

I have lost 70.4 lbs and 45 inches total body.

How long have you been a patient of the program?

I have been on the program for 17 weeks and am 29.6 pounds from my goal.

How will you maintain your weight loss*?

I will continue to exercise, count calories and make smart choices when choosing what to eat.  If I choose to eat more calories than I should I need to make sure that I exercise harder or cut calories somewhere else. 

Why would you recommend this program over other programs?

This program teaches you to make life changes in both food and exercise.  Other programs I have tried I just go back to the old ways as there was no support system.  With this program the people in the group become your family and support system giving encouraging words when you are down.  Dr. Miller truly cares about your success and is there to ensure your health is never in jeopardy, and the counselor Nancy is there each week making sure that we talk about our struggles and successes.  Then there is the most amazing program director Jennie she is the biggest supporter for each and every patient.
