Midwife Care

If you have decided to conceive or are already pregnant, you have probably started to look for a practitioner to care for you during pregnancy and the birth of your baby. The type of health care provider you choose - an obstetrician-gynecologist (Ob/Gyn), a family physician, or a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) - may depend on a number of factors, including what kind of experience you want, where you plan to give birth, and whether your pregnancy is normal or high risk.

Midwives

In Texas, there is a broad umbrella that covers the term “midwife”. Some midwives earn their title via an apprentice-based training program and deliver babies out of hospital without any physician collaboration or formal science/health care/nursing education.

At ARC, our midwives are Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs). This means they are advanced-practice RNs trained in both nursing and midwifery, and are hospital-based and work collaboratively with physicians. CNMs are licensed and have prescriptive authority, and are governed by the Texas Board of Nurses along with other advance practice nurses like Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Nurse-Practitioners (NPs).

Benefits of Certified Nurse Midwives

CNMs value the lifetime care of a woman. They see women for all aspects of care in the postpartum period including normal and not normal healing, lactation, post-partum mood disorders, as well ongoing care via annual exams, family planning (including IUD and Nexplanon® insertion), and gynecologic problems. Many, through physician collaboration, have learned to take care of a woman through tough days like fetal loss in all trimesters, compassionate care for fetal anomalies and other pregnancy complications, and other things such as diagnosis of gynecologic and breast cancers.

Our specially trained Certified Nurse Midwives work with you to meet your healthcare needs. These highly skilled professionals collaborate with your Ob/Gyn to ensure you get the best care. If you want to use the services of a midwife for your pregnancy, you can rest assured knowing that our CNMs are certified, hospital-based, and physician-collaborative.
