Frequently Asked Questions About 3D/4D Elective Fetal Sonograms:

  • What is an elective fetal 3D/4D sonogram?

Austin Regional Clinic offers optional fetal 3D/4D ultrasound to our OB patients for the purpose of providing a positive bonding experience with their unborn baby. We have several packages available that include 3D pictures and 4D video of your baby.

  • What is the difference between 3D and 4D?

3D is a still image of your baby, while 4D is moving, or real time 3D.

  • Is 3D/4D imaging safe for my baby and me?

3D and 4D ultrasound use the same frequency sound waves as your doctor uses on a normal diagnostic 2D ultrasound. Prenatal ultrasound imaging has been used for over 35 years with no proven, quantifiable negative side effects from its proper use.

  • What kind of ultrasound equipment do you use to obtain the 3D/4D images and who performs the procedure?

At ARC we use new, state of the art, high resolution GE Voluson Ultrasound Systems. GE Volusonsare recognized in the ultrasound community as the premier leader in fetal 3D/4D ultrasound system engineering. Our sonographers are registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, the highest standard in ultrasound operator credentialing.

  • Is the 3D/4D elective fetal sonogram a diagnostic procedure?

No, the 3D/4D elective sonogram is for the purpose of obtaining surface images and video of your baby for bonding purposes only. We make every effort to obtain clear images of your baby. Your doctor will authorize diagnostic ultrasound exams as needed.

  • How far along in my pregnancy should I be when I schedule the elective 3D/4D ultrasound?

We tend to obtain our best images of the baby’s face between 26 and 32 weeks. Please consider scheduling your procedure at least 3 to 4 weeks prior to that time.

  • Can you tell the gender of my baby during the 3D/4D ultrasound?

Our sonographers can usually confirm the gender of your baby within the time frame of the 3D/4D ultrasound. If for some reason, the baby is not in a good position to confirm its gender, we will be happy to look again later, at no further cost to you.

  • Are the pictures always as beautiful as in the magazines and on TV?

Usually, we obtain great 3D/4D images. Occasionally, the baby will be in a less than ideal position for perfect baby pictures. We will give you an opportunity to move around to encourage the baby to move into a more favorable position. After trying for an appropriate time, we may need to reschedule the procedure for a later date when the baby is in a good position for 3D/4D imaging. We will make a good faith attempt to obtain quality pictures for you.

  • Does insurance cover the cost of the 3D/4D experience?

At this point, insurance does not pay for these procedures. When you schedule your appointment, our scheduler will discuss the various packages we offer and can take your credit card payment at that time.
