"Acne scars can affect both the look and feel of your skin, especially when they create uneven texture or are depressed," says Marci J. Christensen, CMA, CLT, BSHS, OLINO Medical Aesthetics team member. "The good news is, there are many simple, non-surgical treatments that can help smooth things out and make your skin feel and look better, and make you feel more like yourself again!"

At OLINO Medical Aesthetics, we will create a personalized treatment plan for you based on your skin type and goals. Here are some of the treatments we offer to help improve the look of acne scars:

Laser resurfacing

These treatments use focused light energy to remove damaged skin and encourage new skin tissue to form, and can target redness, texture, and sunken scars. Over time, they stimulate collagen and elastin, helping improve appearance and smooth the surface of the skin.

Options include:

Microneedling

This treatment uses tiny needles to create small injuries in the skin, which triggers natural healing. Treatments help rebuild skin tissue and improve texture. This type of therapy is especially helpful for sunken scars because it increases collagen and strengthens the skin from within.

Options include:

Chemical peels

Using special solutions to gently remove the top layers of skin, chemical peels allow new, smoother skin to grow in its place. This treatment is often part of a larger treatment plan.

Dermal fillers

For deeper sunken scars, dermal fillers can add volume under the skin. Some fillers help lift and smooth uneven areas. Others may also be used to relax surrounding muscles and improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Options include:

Hydrafacials

Gentle treatments meant to clean, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin. While hydrafacials do not remove deep acne scars, they do support overall skin care and can enhance the results of other treatments by improving skin health and glow.

IPL (intense pulsed light) photofacials

Targeting redness and dark spots caused by acne, IPL photofacials help even out skin tone and can make acne scars less noticeable, improving overall appearance.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)

Often combined with microneedling, PRF helps boost collagen and speed up recovery, making it a natural option within medical aesthetics.

Options include:

Skin tightening

These treatments use heat-based technology to firm the skin. Skin tightening can improve mild sunken scars by stimulating collagen and making the skin appear smoother and more even.

Options include:

Topical medications

At-home skin care is one of the most important parts of any treatment plan. Topical medications such as a retinoid, salicylic acid, or a targeted cream may help improve skin texture and prevent future breakouts. These products support in-office treatments and help maintain results over time. And the office treatments give a delivery system for deeper penetration of products.

"Even if your acne scars have been there for a while, that doesn't mean they're permanent," says Marci. "There are more options than ever to improve texture and restore a smoother, more even look — so you can look and feel confident in your skin again."
