Orthopedic surgery for spine, back, and neck conditions

Spine surgery at ARC is available to patients 18 and older. We focus on addressing the underlying cause of your pain so you can regain mobility and comfortably enjoy your daily activities. ARC spine surgeons specialize in treating conditions affecting the spine, lumbar (lower back), thoracic (middle back), and cervical (neck) areas, such as sciatica, herniated and slipped discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative scoliosis. Our surgeons are highly experienced in performing a full range of surgical procedures, including degenerative spine surgery and disc surgeries with robotic navigation assistance.

Thorough evaluations to determine the right treatment plan

Before considering surgery, we recommend scheduling your first appointment with your ARC primary care physician, advanced practice clinician (APC), or a spine care specialist for a comprehensive evaluation. The evaluation may include physical examination and diagnostic imaging to help identify the root cause of your symptoms. If possible, your care team will recommend a non-invasive treatment plan that can help alleviate your pain and improve your mobility without the need for surgical intervention.

If your evaluation indicates that surgery may be beneficial, your ARC doctor or APC can refer you to an ARC spine surgeon who will explain potential surgical options, address your questions and concerns, and guide you through surgery and recovery.

Recovering from spine surgery

Recovery from spine, neck, or back surgery varies from patient to patient and significantly depends on the procedure and your individual health profile. Some surgeries may allow you to perform light activities within a couple of weeks, while others may require several months for a full recovery.

Your ARC spine surgeon will work closely with your care team to support you during recovery — helping explain what to expect after surgery, setting a realistic timeline and goals, and referring you to a trusted physical therapist.

Services

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a surgical procedure used to remove a damaged disc. Once the disc is removed, the vertebrae are stabilized. A small implant is used to create a fusion.

Cervical Disc Replacement

Cervical Disc Replacement

Cervical disc replacement (CDR) is a surgery that replaces a damaged neck disc with an artificial one. This is a great option for young patients with a disc herniation in their neck.

Degenerative Spine Surgery

Degenerative Spine Surgery

Degenerative spine surgery addresses spine, back, and neck conditions, including degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and other spine-related conditions.

Endoscopic Spine Surgery

Endoscopic Spine Surgery

Endoscopic spine surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small high-definition camera and specialized tools to access and treat conditions such as herniated discs and spinal stenosis in the spine, back, and neck.

Fused Disc Surgery with Robotic Navigation Assistance

Fused Disc Surgery with Robotic Navigation Assistance

Fused disc surgery with robotic navigation assistance uses robotic instruments to accurately join two or more vertebrae together and stabilize the spine.

Lower Back Pain Treatment

Lower Back Pain Treatment

An ARC physician or advanced practice clinician (APC) can help determine the cause of your back pain and provide treatment to relieve or reduce discomfort.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery (Laminectomy)

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery (Laminectomy)

This surgery addresses pain and symptoms caused by spinal stenosis, which can be caused by disc herniations or bone spurs — some patients are even born with spinal stenosis. We perform a "laminectomy," which involves removing bone and soft tissue around the spinal canal, to decompress the nerve roots that are causing pain.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery with Robotic Navigation Assistance

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery with Robotic Navigation Assistance

Lumbar spinal stenosis surgery with robotic navigation assistance uses robotic instruments to accurately access the affected spine area through minimally invasive correction. The surgery addresses pain and symptoms caused by spinal stenosis and instability of the spine.

Neck Pain Treatment

Neck Pain Treatment

An ARC physician or advanced practice clinician (APC) can help determine the cause of your neck pain and provide care to relieve or reduce discomfort.

Posterior Cervical Laminoplasty

Posterior Cervical Laminoplasty

This surgery addresses neurologic problems caused by cervical spinal stenosis. The cervical spinal canal is enlarged by opening up the roof (or "lamina") of the cervical spine at a few different levels and then holding the roof open with small plates and screws.

Slipped Disc Surgery with Robotic Navigation Assistance

Slipped Disc Surgery with Robotic Navigation Assistance

Slipped disc surgery with robotic navigation assistance uses robotic instruments to accurately access the affected spine area through minimally invasive correction. The surgery addresses pain and symptoms caused by herniated or slipped intervertebral discs.

Conditions

Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Cervical Spinal Stenosis

This refers to the gradual compression of the cervical spine, which can be caused by disc herniations or bone spurs — some patients are born with spinal stenosis. Many patients with this issue have problems with worsening balance — they feel like they have to hold on to walls or other objects while walking. Many patients also have worsening problems with hand dexterity — their handwriting gets messier, or they drop objects more frequently. These issues should prompt you to see an ARC spine specialist.

Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Intervertebral disc disease is a common condition characterized by the breakdown (degeneration) of one or more of the discs that separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae), causing pain in the back or neck and frequently in the legs and arms. The intervertebral discs provide cushioning between vertebrae and absorb pressure put on the spine.

Lumbar Disk Disease (Herniated Disk)

Lumbar Disk Disease (Herniated Disk)

Lumbar disk disease (herniated disk) is caused by a change in the structure of the normal disk in the lower back area, which can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or changes in sensation.

Lumbar Disk Herniation

Lumbar Disk Herniation

Lumbar disk herniation is caused by a change in the structure of the normal disk in the lower back area; typically, it refers to a part of the central jelly material of a disc that has come out of place and presses on one or more of the nerves to your legs. This can cause pain, weakness, numbness, or changes in sensation in one or both of your legs — or "sciatica."

Sciatica

Sciatica

Sciatica, also called lumbar radiculopathy, is a pain that originates along your sciatic nerve that extends from the back of your pelvis down the back of your thigh. It's usually caused by a herniated (or bulging) disk in your spine that presses on your sciatic nerve.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal narrows and pinches the nerves, resulting in back and leg pain while standing or walking. Many patients with spinal stenosis find temporary relief when they sit down or lean forward (i.e., leaning over a shopping cart at the grocery store). Spinal stenosis often occurs in older adults, but younger people who are born with a small spinal canal may also develop symptoms.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is caused by excessive extension of the low back in which a part of one vertebra in the low back slips forward on the vertebrae below it.
