Growing up, I wanted to become a police
officer, but I chose a career in medicine in order to help people after my
mother developed a severe illness. Then I witnessed first-hand how important it
is to receive good and compassionate care, and the positive effect that could
have on patients and their families in easing their tension and suffering
during difficult illness. I believe all patients deserve equal care and respect
regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, social status, or any other factors. We,
as providers, owe it to the patients to provide them with all the information
needed to the best of our capabilities, to help them be an active part in their
healthcare decision-making. We should always function as partners.
