In an article from the Austin American-Statesman, Manish M. Naik, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Medical Information Officer of Austin Regional Clinic (ARC), shared insight on local trends for flu, COVID-19, and other viruses circulating this time of year. Schedule your annual vaccines now or after Halloween to help build protection by Thanksgiving.
Flu and COVID rates are low both locally and nationally; however, this may change as we reach the end of November. Dr. Naik says that although doctors have not seen the first surge of flu yet, "People have been proactive," and more people are opting to get the flu vaccine earlier.
The COVID vaccine is also still recommended for anyone 65 or older and high-risk groups, like young children or those with chronic conditions. Dr. Naik says, "We are spending time explaining why it's important to get a COVID vaccine to these individuals. I lose less sleep over the healthy population."
