ARC: Hepatitis B vaccine guidelines

This month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) released new recommendations regarding the hepatitis B (Hep B) vaccine for infants. The new recommendations allow parents and doctors to delay or even decline the Hep B vaccine for newborns unless there is known exposure risk.

In response, the American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP) says they will continue to support their long-standing recommendation for routine hepatitis B vaccination for all infants at birth, two months, and six months, saying that the pacing of these doses has been rigorously tested and proven to be safe and effective over several decades.

The AAP argues that delaying the vaccine leaves infants vulnerable and cites a 99% drop in infant hepatitis B infections after universal newborn vaccination began in 1991. The article states that insurance coverage is expected to remain aligned with AAP recommendations.

Local response

The Austin American-Statesman has reported that many area physicians plan to continue following AAP's longstanding recommendation for universal newborn vaccination. This includes ARC Pediatrics, who stated that "We are aligned with the American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP) continued recommendation for routine hepatitis B vaccination for all newborns."

This decision is built on a solid foundation of years of research, safety, and quality outcomes, and from a history of following respected national organizations' guidelines. ARC will continue to work with parents/patients to ensure shared decision-making and individualized care while striving to make the best evidence-based and informed decisions.
