The FDA-approved DEXA body composition analysis uses X-ray technology combined with software to provide patients with an in-depth analysis of their fat tissue, lean mass, and metabolic rate. For people aiming to make changes in their body composition through weightlifting, diet, or other activities, the analysis informs them where they need to focus most. Many people schedule scans every three to four months to track their progress. A clinician referral is not needed.
ARC conducts DEXA body scans in our radiology departments on the same machines as bone density screenings. In fact, both the DEXA body composition scan and a bone density screening can be done at the same time, if requested at the time of scheduling.
The DEXA body composition scan takes only a few minutes. It is recommended to wear loose fitting clothing as you will lie down on the X-ray bed. The amount of radiation is low enough that a lead apron is not needed during the scan.
The DEXA body composition scan is a $75 out-of-pocket expense and is not covered by insurance.
