About
Gowrishankar Gnanasekaran, MD, MPH
-
Dr. Gnanasekaran grew up in a suburban town in southern India in an extended family with his grandparents, uncles, and aunts under the same roof. In his free time, biking, yoga, and meditation are things he loves to do on a daily basis. Dr. Gnanasekaran also likes to cook wholesome foods on weekends for his family, as “it is a nice relaxation activity, and when you do it with family, it becomes a family event.”
Growing up in an extended family in India, I had the privilege to be around older adults in my own family. I was able to see the day-to-day health challenges that come with aging. At that time, the aging phenomenon was not properly understood by many healthcare providers, as proper training was not available. After I completed my internal medicine training, I chose to further specialize in Geriatrics to understand the unique needs of the aging population and better serve them. Proper understanding of the natural aging process, with good lifestyle factors, helps with a smooth transition. Educating, engaging, and empowering patients with proper tools helps them become equal partners in their health. I believe in formulating patient-centric care plans that take patients’ values and goals into consideration. This helps with better compliance and adherence from patients.
