Preventing the preventable … ARC clinics save vision

Preventing blindness in patients with diabetes

Between 40 to 45% of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have some stage of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. While highly treatable if caught early, data suggest fewer than half of people living with diabetes have annual eye screenings.

ARC tackled this problem head on, by installing Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS) in clinics to provide a painless screening that can be completed in five minutes by ARC staff.

As of July 2021, we've had 249 saves for the year, which are patients who would have lost their vision within 12 months. We are on track to exceed 2020 numbers for scans.

In the latest Leadership Blog, Dr. Anas Daghestani, CEO of Austin Regional Clinic and the Medical Director of ARC Population Health & Clinical Quality, talks about how ARC worked with partners to build this program and what's next.
