Constipation in babies can worry any parent. "It's normal for parents to feel concerned, but most of the time, constipation is temporary and treatable," says Jacqueline F. Fournier, MD, Pediatrics at ARC Dripping Springs. "With a few simple steps, we can usually bring your baby relief and get them back to feeling comfortable."
How often should a baby have bowel movements?
Newborns typically pass stool every day for the first month or two. After that, some babies pass stool less often. But every infant is different. A breastfed baby may poop several times a day or only once every few days. Formula-fed babies may have one or more bowel movements daily. What's most important is that the stool is soft and the baby is not in pain. A pediatrician or advanced practice clinician (APC) can tell you if your baby's stool pattern is normal.
Common symptoms of constipation in infants
A constipated baby may go several days without a bowel movement. You might notice symptoms like a hard, dry stool, straining, or a swollen tummy. Your baby may seem fussy, unsettled, or irritated. Some babies cry during bowel movements or seem to have belly pain or bloating from trapped gas.
What causes constipation in babies?
Constipation in babies can have many causes. Most often, it may happen when switching from breastfeeding to formula or when starting solid foods. Other causes may be dehydration, teething problems, or illness.
When to take your baby to the doctor for constipation
If home care or remedies like tummy massages or changes in food don't provide relief, your doctor or APC can help with treatment to soften stool and ease symptoms.
See a pediatrician or APC if your baby has severe pain, swelling in the abdomen, bloody stool, throws up or has a fever, won't eat and seems unusually tired, or goes more than a few days without a bowel movement. These can be signs of a more serious issue.
"Constipation in infants is common and often gets better with time and care," says Dr. Fournier. "But, if you're concerned, don't hesitate to ask for help."
