In a recent article in Education Week, Martha I. Pyron, MD, Orthopedics and Sports & Musculoskeletal Medicine at ARC Bee Cave, added her expertise to a discussion about heat-related illnesses in student-athletes, saying it can be serious—even fatal—but prevention doesn't have to be expensive. "Heat illness is 100% preventable," Dr. Pyron says. Awareness, proper planning, and immediate response are key to keeping student-athletes safe, no matter the school's budget.
Heat safety resources are within reach
Organizations like the University Interscholastic League and the National Federation of State High School Associations offer free courses, videos, and guidance on prevention and emergency response. Simple measures—staying hydrated, taking breaks in the shade, and using cold towels or ice packs—can save lives.
Dr. Pyron emphasizes that heat stroke can sneak up on athletes who push themselves too hard. "Most people think intuitively, you will know how to manage it, and it won't be as big of a deal, but it can really sneak up on you," she says. Students, coaches, and staff need to recognize early signs—muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea—and act immediately to cool down the body.
Student-athletes should also be educated on how to prevent heat illnesses. "High schoolers might not be aware that they're beginning to experience symptoms and often play through it," said Dr. Pyron. "They may just keep pushing themselves and not realize that there's a problem," she added.
