What is a skin rash?

A skin rash is a change in the skin's color, texture, or feel. It can appear as redness, swelling, bumps, or dry patches. Some rashes on the skin are itchy or painful, while others may not cause any discomfort at all. Rashes can show up anywhere on the body, including the face, arms, legs, and back.

"Rashes may seem minor, but they can be the skin's way of signaling something more serious," says Charlotte Wright Williamson, APRN, MSN, FNP-C, Dermatology team member. "If you're unsure about a rash, it's always better to ask than to wait."

What causes a skin rash?

Rashes can happen for many reasons. Allergies, contact with irritants, or reactions to medicine can all be causes. Skin conditions like dermatitis or hives are also common reasons for rashes. Sometimes, an infection from bacteria or a virus can cause a rash, along with other symptoms like fever. Some rashes may go away on their own, but others may need treatment with topical creams or medication.

When to see a dermatologist or advanced practice clinician (APC)

It's a good idea to see a doctor or APC if your rash is severe or doesn't improve. You should visit a dermatologist or APC if you have:

  • A rash spreading across large areas of your body
  • A blistering rash or open sores, especially if the blisters are oozing or crusting
  • A painful rash that burns, stings, or feels sore to the touch and makes it hard to move or sleep
  • A rash on sensitive areas like the eyes, lips, mouth, or genitals

Getting the right diagnosis and treatment can help relieve the itch and stop the rash from getting worse. Treating a rash early can prevent further swelling, infection, or long-term skin damage. A dermatologist or APC can help find the cause and provide the best care for your skin.

"I'm here to help you understand what your skin is telling you," says Charlotte. "If a rash is affecting your comfort, confidence, or daily life, don't wait — come see me."
