Hip Care

Person with hip pain

Orthopedic care for hip injuries and conditions

Pain and limited movement or motion are symptoms of a hip injury. Active adults can expect hip pain caused by pulled muscles and ligaments. Because the large bones that make up the hip also serve as anchors for several large muscles, overuse injuries and strains are common. Additionally, inflammatory or degenerative problems such as bursitis and arthritis can develop. Orthopedic surgeons specialize in restorative hip surgery, hip replacement, and rehabilitation to relieve pain and improve function as much as possible after a hip injury.

What are the risks of hip fractures from falls?

The hip is highly susceptible to injury, especially from falls. Risks of hip fractures increase after the age of 50, doubling every five to six years. Women are more likely to have hip fractures than men. Almost half of all women aged 90 or older will experience a hip fracture.

For hip injuries resulting in muscle and ligament strains, an orthopedic doctor will focus on pain relief and restoring range of motion and strength. Surgery or hip replacement is usually needed to repair a hip fracture. Hip arthroscopy can also be used to treat femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), a major cause of hip pain and labral tears in younger patients.

Services

Hip Arthroscopy

Hip Arthroscopy

Hip arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows doctors to view the hip joint without making a large incision (cut) through the skin and other soft tissues, and is used to diagnose and treat a wide range of hip problems.

Hip Replacement

Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery (total hip arthroplasty) is surgery to replace a worn out or damaged hip joint with an artificial joint (prosthesis). This surgery may be a choice after a hip fracture or for severe pain because of arthritis.

Conditions

Arthritis

Arthritis

Arthritis and other rheumatic diseases are characterized by pain, swelling, and limited movement in joints and connective tissues in the body.

Avascular Necrosis

Avascular Necrosis

Avascular necrosis is a disease that results from the short-term (temporary) or lifelong (permanent) loss of blood supply to the bone. When blood supply is cut off, the bone tissue dies and the bone collapses. If avascular necrosis happens near a joint, the joint surface may collapse. Symptoms include minor early joint pain or limited range of motion because of pain.

Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)

Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition in which extra bone grows along one or both of the bones that form the hip joint — giving the bones an irregular shape. Because they do not fit together perfectly, the bones rub against each other during movement. Over time this friction can damage the joint, causing pain and limiting activity.

Labral Tear

Labral Tear

The labrum is a piece of fibrocartilage (rubbery tissue) attached to the rim of the shoulder socket that helps keep the ball of the joint in place. When this cartilage is torn, it is called a labral tear.
