Walk a mile in the patient’s shoes
February 06, 2020
Austin Regional Clinic is pleased to announce that Regina A. Koshy, MD, Cardiologist, has joined the team at ARC Far West Medical Tower.
When discussing her philosophy of practice, Dr. Koshy talks about lessons learned in literature. She say, “In one of my favorite stories, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ Atticus Finch taught his daughter Scout (and me) an important lesson. He said, ‘If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.’ This ‘simple trick’ is a principle that has touched me, and I have tried to incorporate it in everything I do.”
The Patient Story
Dr. Koshy says she chose Cardiology as a specialty because it combines the old with the new. She says, “Cardiology captivated me because the specialty relies both on the latest advancements in science as well as the old tools of a good physical exam and history to improve the quality of patient’s lives. I enjoy the breadth of cardiovascular disease and I work closely with a patient to achieve the best possible cardiovascular health possible.”
“In every patient lies two stories,” says Dr. Koshy; “The story of their health and the story of their life.” She adds, “The two stories are indelibly intertwined, and learning the whole story helps in solving a patient's problem.”
Move More, Eat Less, and Do Not Smoke
Dr. Koshy spends her free time with her family. She says, “We love to taking our kids to local parks and listening to live music.’ She adds,” I also enjoy traveling, running, swimming, exploring the local food scene, and playing the piano.”
What is Dr. Koshy’s favorite health tip? “The secret to improving one’s lifestyle is first being appropriately motivated to make changes and then changing one’s daily habits to move more, eat less, and not smoke!”
