The importance of a good night’s sleep

Sleep is a very important function for your body. There are multiple reasons that why is important:

  • First it helps with our mental health.
  • If you sleep a good night’s sleep it gives you energy so you can exercise.
  • It also improves your immunity.
  • There are some other benefits so if you sleep very well all night your blood pressure kind of goes down and helps our heart functions.
  • Your blood sugar actually goes down at night so that also helps to prevent the type 2 diabetes.
  • Lastly it actually helps with the weight loss.

How much sleep do you need?

  • Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night.
  • With kids it's actually more based on how old you are.
    • If you are a baby of course you need at least 12 to13 hours of sleep.
    • Six to 12 years of age kids should get at least 10 hours of sleep.
    • Teenagers should get at least 10to 12 hours of sleep every night because they are growing.

If you have insomnia there are some sleep hygiene you can do at home:

  • Make sure you don't smoke or drink alcohol and caffeine in the evening time.
  • If you're exercising exercise in the morning instead of evening time.
  • Keep your room dark and cool.
  • Stay away from electronics.

When you have tried everything at home and you're still having problems, for instance with snoring, or someone told you that you stopped breathing, or you’re feeling fatigued during the daytime, then definitely see the doctor. When I see you in my office, I like to hear your story; either if it's a sleep any other issues or regular checkup, I want to hear your stories, your background, and come up with a personalized plan together.
