Austin and Allergies

As most of us know, cedar fever season is at its height right now here in Austin. But what you may not realize is that with Austin’s plethora of seasonal pollens, is it completely possible to have seasonal allergies throughout the year. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is a common condition that causes symptoms many of us are very familiar with; such as sneezing, stuffy, itchy or runny nose, watery eyes, and itching on the roof of the mouth.

Dr. Colleen Adkins , Allergy and Asthma specialist at ARC Wilson Parke and ARC Cedar Park Medical Plaza, explains “Allergic rhinitis occurs when your immune system identifies an allergen, produces antibodies, and causes the release of histamine and other chemicals.” Dr. Adkins adds, “Here in Austin, many people suffer from allergies due to the year round prevalence of pollen.”

In this recent ARC Healthcare Minute podcast, Dr. Adkins advises all allergy sufferers to “avoid exposure during times of high pollen or mold counts.”
