A jungle medical clinic changed her life
June 17, 2016
New Pediatrician at ARC Southwest, Kymberly T. Colman, MD, volunteered after college for a few months in a jungle medical clinic in El Salvador. “It was a life-changing experience,” she says, and encouraged her to go into pediatric medicine.
“Going to the doctor’s office shouldn’t be a traumatizing experience,” says Dr. Colman. “If kids are engaged in their care, because things are explained in a way that makes sense to them, they are more accepting of all parts of the visit. “ She especially enjoys “helping a young, scared patient evolve into a healthy, happy adult.”
When not at work, Dr. Colman “lives to be outside.” She spends time in the mud/garden, and recently participated in the Tough Mudder Central Texas, a 10+ mile mud and obstacle course designed to test physical strength, stamina, and mental grit. She enjoys many outdoor sports and seeing movies with her husband and son.
Dr. Colman’s best tip for good health? Don’t rely on Google to diagnose your symptoms – many illnesses have very similar signs and symptoms, and diseases aren’t always straightforward. And wear sunscreen!!
