Patient Care is This Surgeon’s Passion

Austin Regional Clinic is pleased to announce that Samuel Everette “Rhett” Long, III, MD, General Surgeon, has joined the team at ARC South 1st Specialty.

Dr. Long, fellowship-trained in endocrine surgery,  says he wanted to be a surgeon from a very young age. He says, “I have wanted to be a physician ever since I was in the fourth grade when we dissected a pig heart in class.” On why he was drawn to surgery as a specialty, Dr. Long adds, “Surgery offers me the unique opportunity to manage many chronic ailments with an operation and also be part of a patient’s recovery. There is no greater privilege in medicine than being someone’s surgeon.”

Communication is Key

When describing his philosophy of practice, Dr. Long says, “My love of medicine comes from a love of people, and I try to care for each patient as if they were a member of my own family.” He says that that he strives to communicate with his patients in a way that they will understand what is happening to them, saying, “Surgeons are not always the best communicators but I believe this is one of my greatest strengths. I try to explain things in a way that everyone can understand and always make time for questions, even after the appointment is over. Patients are my passion.”

In his free time, Dr. Long says that he and his family “enjoy eating out, being on the lake, and playing with our dog, Ranger.” Not surprisingly, this Dallas native adds, “I am also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan!”

Dr. Long’s health advice for everyone? “High calcium levels can be the result of a parathyroid disorder and cause kidney stones, osteoporosis, fatigue and bone pain. Talk to your doctor about your calcium.”
