Focus on Organic Baby Food

Elizabeth Knapp, MD Your health care expert is Elizabeth Knapp, MD, Pediatrics, ARC Far West.

Is organic baby food really best for your baby?
Dr. Knapp believes it can be beneficial, especially before the age of two when the baby’s brain is developing at a rapid rate and the organs are most likely to be sensitive to exposure to harmful substances.

"Even small amounts of pesticide exposure is dangerous for babies because of their smaller body mass. Their brains are developing rapidly and are especially sensitive to neurotoxins at this age," says Dr. Knapp.

Dr. Thomas G. Bening Offers New Heartburn Procedure

Millions of Americans suffer from a more severe form of heartburn known as GERD (Gastroespohageal Reflux Disease) or, as it is more commonly known, acid reflux disease.

But now, thanks to new technology, ARC General Surgeon Dr. Thomas Bening at ARC Cedar Park Medical Plaza offers patients a new advanced procedure to alleviate the pain of GERD. Dr. Bening is the first surgeon in Central Texas to perform the new TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) procedure which is, basically, surgery without an incision.

The first procedure was performed in late December at Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, the first hospital in Central Texas to have the EsophyX device for surgeons trained in its usage.

The TIF procedure reconstructs the valve between the esophagus and stomach to prevent reflux. It is based on the same well-proven principles of conventional, more invasive laparoscopic surgery. The advantage of the TIF procedure is that it is “surgery from within” – performed transorally (through the mouth). Because the procedure is incisionless, there is reduced pain, no visible scar, and most patients can get back to their normal activities within a few days.

“The TIF procedure with the EsophyX device can significantly improve the quality of life for our patients,” said Dr. Bening. “GERD is an anatomical problem which needs an anatomical solution.  Clinical studies show that at two years after the TIF procedure, nearly 80% of patients are off their daily reflux medications and can eat and drink foods and beverages they avoided for many years. Reflux no longer impacts their life like it previously did.”

Clayton Glezman, 23, who suffered from heartburn for over 10 years was the first patient who received this new procedure. Glezman says “I’m now completely off any medication, and I don’t have to worry about anything I eat or drink. And I feel great!”

Dr. Bening commented, “I’m happy to be providing this procedure to area patients who are looking for an effective treatment option for their heartburn or acid reflux disease.”

If you have symptoms that you may think are just heartburn, check with your ARC doctor about whether the TIF procedure is right for you, and keep both your heart and your digestive system healthy!
