Endocrinology

Endocrinology is the medical specialty that studies disorders of the endocrine system, a complex group of glands. The glands are organs that release hormones which regulate bodily functions such as metabolism(food burning and waste elimination), growth, development, and tissue function. They also play a part in reproduction.

An endocrinologist is a doctor who is specially trained to diagnose and treat disorders that affect your glands. Your primary care doctor refers you to an endocrinologist when you have a problem with your endocrine system.

Diseases and disorders of the endocrine system can be grouped into about nine different areas; diabetes, thyroid diseases, osteoporosis, infertility, obesity, lack of growth, pituitary gland disorders, hypertension and cholesterol (lipid) disorders. Most endocrinologists will specialize in just a few of those areas.

Dr. Maya Bledsoe, located at ARC Seton Northwest, focuses on the four endocrine system diseases listed below:
Other endocrinologists in town offer diabetes and lipid management.
