Electromyography (EMG)

Electromyography, or EMG, involves testing the electrical activity of muscles. A nerve conduction study is usually performed in conjunction with an EMG to measure the conducting function of nerves. It tests the speed impulses travel through a nerve. If both tests are needed, they are usually performed at the same office visit.

Muscular movement involves the action of muscles and nerves and needs an electrical current. In some medical conditions the electrical activity of the muscles or nerves is not normal. Finding and describing these electrical properties in the muscle or nerve may help with the diagnosis of such symptoms as limb pain, numbness, weakness, atrophy or other problems of the muscles or nerves.

ARC’s Dr. Michael Edmond provides EMG and nerve conduction studies every other Wednesday at ARC Far West and ARC South. Please check with your regular doctor if you have any questions about the EMG testing at ARC.
